- W2560311907 abstract ".As a method of research in psychotherapy, we take a school of thought as a subject, examining four stages of development to point out the way in which changing theory leads to particular foci and emphases of investi gation. It is our general purpose to present and illustrate a functional-his torical outline in research methodology. This consists of the interplay of (1) developing stages of theory, (2) empirical lines of investigation stem ming from and feeding into theory, (3) instruments and sources of data. This chapter is essentially a study of methodology rather than of methods alone. We believe that only the combination of theory and method as it comes out of a program of thought qualifies as research. A technique is not a method, and a method is not by itself a research. Thinking is re search. The rest is isolated fact-finding and dilettantism. It is this pro gram of thought, the life-style of a direction of search and a system of research which we have in mind, not as dry bones of methodology but as living interests of people. The portrayal requires a slice of actual history in which we have a unique opportunity to observe a 25-year period cover ing the life span to date of one school of therapy. We mean to demonstrate the main line of descent and variation in one program of thought and the interadaptation of associated specimen researches. Intending to throw only main elements into relief, and within the limits of a single chapter, we cannot present all theories conceived throughout this span. The reader can turn to Standal (1954) and Gendlin (1962) for their extensions. We cannot report more than a fraction of the findings, but many of these are available in the notable landmark in outcome studies, psychotherapy and Personality Change (1954). Nor can we cata logue the scores of research efforts but this has been admirably done by Cartwright in his Annotated Bibliography (1957). We will not try to characterize the whole effort by presenting only the most sophisticated and complex products; a book such as Butler-Rice-Wagstaff, Quantitative Naturalistic Observation (1963) is a methodological study in itself which does not bear reduction to a resume.
