- W2560701495 abstract "A steady rise in the overall prevalence of obesity has occurred over the past 20 years. Obesity poses a major public health challenge and a significant burden on healthcare resources, both in terms of direct and indirect costs. This obesity epidemic has continued to expand despite the availability of diet and lifestyle counseling, pharmacologic therapy, and bariatric surgery. There remains a huge unmet need for minimally invasive, safe, and effective long-term therapies for obesity. Endoscopic procedures have the ability to bridge the treatment gap between medical therapy and surgery. Recent advances made in the field of endoluminal devices and techniques have provided an increased array of nonsurgical options for the management of obesity. Endoscopic treatments have the opportunity to provide a more cost-effective, accessible, and reversible intervention that can function as a bridge or alternative therapeutic option to bariatric surgery. The use of endoscopy in the treatment of obesity may prove advantageous in potentially reducing postoperative convalescence with decreased pain, incisional hernia development, and surgical site infections compared to standard surgical techniques. Four roles of endoscopy in the care of the bariatric patient will be discussed here: (1) preoperative, (2) intraoperative, (3) postoperative, and (4) primary endoscopic weight loss procedures." @default.
