- W2560927972 abstract "A unit of descriptive statistics was taught to two groups of general college mathematics students at a small college in the Northeast United States. An experimental group (n = 36) was taught to use a computer statistics package (MINITAB). A control group (n = 42) was taught without the use of computers. The unit of descriptive statistics was found to be both appropriate and worthwhile. As a whole the subjects in this study showed significant gains in attitudes toward statistics (t = 4.56, p $<$.001). Subjects also communicated that they felt that the material was relevant to them.The use of the computer statistical package was no more effective and no less effective than the traditional approach was with respect to statistics achievement. The groups scored equally on the items of the achievement test which favored computer solution, but the experimental group out-scored the control group marginally on the items which did not favor computer solution. The computer approach did not restrict the experimental group's understanding of concepts. However, the control group seemed more confident in its level of statistical knowledge. The unit in descriptive statistics produced no differences between males and females in terms of statistics achievement, attitudes toward statistics, or attitudes toward computer usage. A significant difference in attitudes toward computer usage between males and females which existed before the study was maintained (p $<$.05). Males had significantly more positive attitudes toward computer usage scale before and after treatment. Less class time was spent on statistics instruction with the experimental group, given the time spent teaching the requisite computer skills. The experimental group reported spending less time on homework than the control group (p $<$.05).The results indicate that descriptive statistics is an appropriate topic and that inclusion of a computer statistical package can be implemented within the same time normally apportioned to the unit of descriptive statistics. If the unit were assigned a marginally larger portion of the general math course, enough extra time to allow for a mixture of the treatments, the concerns about lower confidence in the level of achievement expressed might be avoided." @default.
