- W2561950922 abstract "Cluster systems are becoming increasingly more attractive for designing scalable servers with switched network architectures that offer much higher bandwidth than the broadcast-based networks. Design of high performance cluster networks with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, therefore, becomes important to support a variety of multimedia applications, many of which have real-time constraints. Most commercial routers, which are based on the wormhole-switching paradigm, can deliver high performance, but lack QoS provisioning. Therefore, it would be advantageous if we could leverage off of the large amount of effort that has gone into the design and development of these wormhole routers and adapt them to support integrated traffic with minimal design changes. Design and evaluation of cluster networks with QoS provisioning is the focus of this thesis. In particular, we investigate various issues for efficient handling of best-effort and real-time traffic in clusters based on wormhole switching paradigm. We study five research issues in this thesis. First, a non-preemptive pipelined wormhole router, called Media Worm, is proposed and investigated based on a basic wormhole router architecture. Second, to overcome inflexibility of the MediaWorm router for dynamically changing workload, a preemptive pipelined router is proposed. We propose a flit-level input buffer preemption and a flit acceleration mechanisms for providing preemption of lower priority messages in favor of higher priority messages. The third part of the thesis deals with the design of a QoS capable network interface card (NIC) based on the Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA) paradigm. The QoS capable routers and QoS capable NICs will be co-evaluated to provide end-to-end QoS guarantees. Next, practical admission and congestion control mechanisms in a cluster environment are considered to aid in end-to-end QoS assurance. Finally, we extend our work to develop a simulation testbed conforming to the InfiniBand™ Architecture (IBA) specification and investigate QoS design issues for system area networks (SANS) within the IBA framework.
