- W2562295811 abstract "This study is aimed at answering two researchproblems. The first purpose is to find the needs of thestudents taking English course in the EconomicsFaculty. Secondly, to evaluate the existing materialson the basis of their compatibility with the learners'needs. In order to answer the two research problems, thewriter used two research designs. First, the writerused survey to collect the data on the students' needs.Second, she used content analysis to analyze theteaching materials. The instrument used to collect thedata is questionnaire. In this study, the writer doesnot only act as data collector but also as theinstrument of the study for the writer has to interpretthe data by using her skill and competence. In evaluating the existing English teachingmaterials for the students of the Economics Faculty, the writer worked through six stages. First, the writerdivided the criteria based on the criteria suggested byHutchinson and Waters ( 1987: 99-104) . They includeaudience, aims, content, and methodology; however, asstated above that one of the objectives of this studyis to identify the needs of the students whose academicyear is 1998/1999 of the Economics Faculty, the writeranalyzed both target situation and learning needs.Since the criteria suggested by Hutchinson and Watersonly include the learning needs, the writer added onepoint of criteria that is target situation. Second, shestated the results of the questionnaire in percentages, and used them as the basis for subjective analysis.Third, she analyzed the existing English teachingmaterials for the students of the Economics Facultybased on the defining criteria, and used the result asthe basis for objective analysis. Fourth, she matchedthe present materials with the ideas stated by therespondents in the questionnaires. Fifth, she gavepoints to the degree of matching between the twoanalyses, and stated the reason why they were givencertain point. From those points, she judged whetherthe materials match the students' needs or not. After conducting all the steps above, the writerfound that the only aspect that got a score of 3 isaudience. There are two aspects that got a score of 2:topic and exercises. There are nine aspects that got ascore of 1: objective, text version, English skill,English component, the number of the items of theexercises, the sequence of the units in the book, thesequence within a unit, teaching-learning techniques, and context. There are three aspects got a score ofO:expectation, text-type, and medium. From the finding, the writer concluded that the teaching material partlymeet the students' needs as 60% of the aspects beingevaluated got a score of 1.The writer found that the teaching material doesnot match the students' expectation. The writersuggested that the teacher should explain to thestudents clearly at the first time of the Englishlesson that the objective of the course is: thestudents are able to read English textbooks that arerelated to their major, so that they can improve theirstudy. Moreover, the writer also suggested that thereading units should be exploited. In this case thewriter proposed giving background information to thestudents. Besides that, the reading passages can beexploited by including reading comprehension questionsin the material.Concerning the text version, it is better to haveboth authentic and simplified texts. However, for thesimplified texts it is better if the texts aresimplified according to interactional structureproposed by King (1987) as it maintains the same levelof syntactic and lexical complexity as the nativespeaker text, and, hence allows faster acquisitionalopportunities to a learner of a target grammar." @default.
