- W2562302562 abstract "The United Nations has declared this decade (2011-2020) the “Third International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism,” certifying the unremitting duration of colonialism.1 However, the masking of imperial power dynamics today is so effective that few people in the United States or England (the main colonial possessors today) would be able to identify countries that remained colonized. In an article for National Geographic, Karen E. Lange lists 16 countries as the last colonies of the world, but excludes Puerto Rico.2 The issue is not necessarily misinformation but rather that the nature of colonialism today can appear very murky. If colonial subjects are citizens of the empire, as Puerto Ricans are, who could claim colonial subjugation? We tend to locate empires in the past and use old models, like the Roman or nineteenth-century British, to define empires. Fernando Coronil confronts this challenge and provides a framework to look at past and present empires. Coronil defines “‘colonial imperialism’ as the formal dominion of a political center over its colonies; ‘national imperialism’ as the informal dominion of a nation-state over independent nations; and ‘global imperialism’ as the informal dominion by a network of capital and states over an increasingly integrated worldwide system.”3 In this sense, Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. formal empire, while the rest of Latin America forms part of the larger U.S. informal empire. Indeed, informal empire is the predominant form of U.S. global influence today, as Coronil observes." @default.
