In order to improve their corrosion resistance, a sealing process with a solution containing trivalent chromium Cr(+III) and fluorozirconate Zr(+IV) salts was performed. Microstructural observations after sealing reveal the formation of a well covering layer of about 300 nm, enriched in chromium, zirconium, and fluorine. Beside this superficial overlayer, sealing products also line the microscopic opened holes or cracks of very defective anodized layers, inducing a large resistance increase of both the barrier and the porous part of these layers, as measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy performed in 0.5 M K2SO4. The corrosion resistance was characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a sodium chloride corrosive medium, and correlated with results obtained by salt spray tests. The Cr(+III)/Zr(+IV) sealing treatment is really efficient for both alloys. The improvement is more significant in the case of the very defective anodized layer on the 2618 alloy, and is mainly explained by the self-healing behavior of chromium compounds in the sealed layer." @default.
