This study was aimed at investigating an EFL teacher’s beliefs and practices in the teaching of writing. In particular, this study was conducted 1) to investigate the teacher’s beliefs in the teaching of writing on the use of materials, techniques, instructional media, and assessment, 2) to see the reflection of the teacher’s beliefs in her practices, and 3) to explore the factors affecting the teacher’s beliefs. This study employed a descriptive-qualitative design . The research subject was an experienced EFL teacher who had been teaching writing for more than 25 years at Universitas Negeri Malang. Meanwhile, the data collection techniques were conducted by employing a number of instruments. First, there were three interviews conducted by using the interview questions and the audio-recorder. The preliminary interview was held to capture the teacher’s beliefs about the four aspects of teaching. The second interview was done to explore the factors affecting the teacher’s beliefs and the retrospective interview aimed to confirm the observation results and to find out the reasons behind the teacher’s particular actions and the inconsistency between beliefs and practices. Second, the observation and the note-taking were carried out to capture the teacher’s practices in the classroom. The instruments used were the observation guidelines,the field notes, and a video-recorder. In addition, the document review was conducted to see the written feedback practice of the teacher. Analysis of this study revealed that the teacher held a number of beliefs regarding the materials, techniques, the instructional media, and the assessment in the teaching of writing. The findings also showed that the teacher’s beliefs related to these aspects of teaching were underlied by process-genre approach she oriented. Further, her beliefs were mostly corresponded with her practices regarding the four aspects of teaching. The teacher’s experiences, knowledge about teaching writing, and intention to act based on her beliefs played important roles in facilitating the consistency between her beliefs and practices. Besides, the teacher could make her teaching flexible so that she could mediate her conflicting beliefs in her practices. At last, the factors affecting the teacher’s beliefs were early learning experiences, classroom practices, professional coursework, and students’ proficiency. ABSTRAK Farida, Muthia. 2016. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kepercayan yang dimiliki oleh dosen bahasa Inggris dan kegiatan pengajarannya di dalam pembelajaran keterampilan menulis. Secara khusus, penelitian ini dilakukan 1) untuk menginvestigasi kepercayaan dosen bahasa Inggris dalam hal materi pengajaran, teknik, media pembelajaran, dan asesmen, 2) untuk melihat bagaimana refleksi kepercayaan tersebut di dalam kegiatan pengajaran dosen, dan 3) untuk mengeksplor faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan dosen. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain deskriptif-kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah seorang dosen yang berpengalaman mengajar kelas keterampilan menulis lebih dari 25 tahun di Universitas Negeri Malang. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan dengan menggunakan beberapa instrumen penelitian. Pertama, ada tiga wawancara diadakan dengan menggunakan pertanyaan wawancara dan alat perekam suara. Wawancara awal dilaksanakan untuk mengidentifikasi kepercayaan dosen terhadap empat aspek pengajaran tersebut. Wawancara kedua untuk mengeksplor faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan dosen sedangkan wawancara retrospektif berguna untuk mengkonfirmasi hasil observasi serta menganalisis alasan-alasan dibalik aktivitas-aktivitas pengajaran tertentu dan ketidaksesuaian antara kepercayaan dan kegiatan pengajaran dosen di kelas. Berikutnya, observasi dan catatan lapangan berfungsi untuk mendeskripsikan kegiatan pengajaran tersebut sekaligus menganalisis refleksi kepercayaan-kepercayan yang dimiliki dosen tersebut di dalam pengajarannya. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah panduan observasi, catatan lapangan, dan alat perekam video. Selanjutnya, kajian dokumen dilakukan untuk melihat praktek pemberian umpan balik tertulis pada tulisan-tulisan para mahasiswa. Hasil analisis penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dosen berpegang pada beberapa kepercayaan mengenai materi pembelajaran, teknik pengajaran, media pembelajaran, dan asesmen dalam pembelajaran keterampilan menulis. Hasil penelitian juga menunjukkan bahwa kepercayaannya terhadap keempat aspek tersebut didasari oleh pendekeatan process-genre yang ia orientasikan. Selain itu, hampir semua kegiatan pengajaran yang ia lakukan berkaitan dengan keempat aspek pengajaran tersebut sesuai dengan kepercayaannya yang dimilikinya. Penemuan-penemuan di penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa pengalaman sang dosen, pengetahuannya terhadap pengajaran keterampilan menulis, dan adanya kemauan untuk bertindak sesuai dengan kepercayaannya berperan penting dalam memfasilitasi keselarasan antara kepercayaan dan kegiatan pengajaran tersebut. Dosen juga mampu membuat pengajarannya fleksibel untuk dapat memfasilitasi kepercayaan yang bertentangan di dalam pengajarannya. Selanjutnya, faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kepercayaan dosen adalah pengalaman belajar terdahulu, kegiatan pengajaran di kelas, professional coursework, dan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mahasiswa.
