- W2563594479 abstract "The Dominions were central to British strategy in North Africa because they provided the infantry around which Middle East Command built its strategy. This chapter provides a statistical breakdown of how much manpower the Dominions were providing for Middle East Command and when this manpower was available. Johnston argues that maintaining the British foothold in Egypt, and eventually conquering all Axis forces in North Africa, would have been impossible without Dominion divisions. Johnston’s statistics show that Dominion forces, as primarily infantry units, provided a disproportionate number of the combat personnel from 1940 through to the battles of El Alamein. This was possible because Britain provided the manpower-intensive base, supply and ancillary units, making this a symbiotic relationship." @default.
