- W2564047508 abstract "Research suggests that people with disabilities continue to face barriers to equal employment opportunities. While education has been identified as an important equalizer, the relationship between disability, level of educational human capital attainment and career outcomes is complex and not currently fully understood. In this study, we draw on stigma, stereotyping and human capital theory to propose and test a moderating influence of educational human capital on the relationship between disability and career attainment in the form of annual salary using data from 4,084,247 participants, including 234,646 persons with disabilities, who participated in the American Community Survey (ACS). We also examine the extent to which gender and race further moderate the influence of educational human capital due to the potential for multiple sources of stigma, stereotyping and discrimination. We find that educational attainment lessens the negative impact of disability on annual salary but also that the gap in earnings between people with, and without, disabilities grows as level of education increases. Moreover, women with disabilities, and racial minorities with disabilities, gain less annual salary benefit from additional educational human capital attainment.
