- W2564302214 abstract "Background: Most of population-based studies demonstrate an inverse correlation between allergic diseases and lung cancer. However some studies provide conflicting results. Polymorphisms of genes associated with immune system functions modify lung cancer and asthma risk. Aim and objectives: GSTT1, GSTM1, p53 and CCR5 gene polymorphisms associated with cancer were investigated to evaluate whether inverse correlation between asthma and lung cancer is genetically determined. Methods: Genotyping was carried out in 148 asthmatics, 180 lung cancer patients (LC) and 457 healthy subjects. Results: Arg allele of p53 gene was associated with increased LC risk (OR=1.4) and did not effect asthma risk; Pro allele (OR=3.15) and Pro/Pro genotype (OR=8.86) were associated with severe asthma in late-onset current asthma. GSTT1-null genotype increased early-onset current asthma risk (OR=3.78), late-onset current asthma risk (OR=2.69) and LC risk (OR=3.56). GSTM1-null genotype was associated with LC risk (OR=2.59) and late-onset current asthma risk (OR=7.42) but did not effect risk of early-onset current asthma (OR=1.7). CCR5del32 allele was protective for asthma (OR=0.58) while in LC was similar to control (OR=0.81). CCR5/CCR5del32+Arg/Arg allele coincidences of CCR5 and p53 genes was higher in LC compared to early-onset current asthma (OR=4.17). Conclusions: Polymorphism of genes associated with immune functions may effect lung cancer risk in asthma patients. Genetic heterogeneity of different asthma phenotypes may clarify the previous conflicting results on association between asthma and lung cancer." @default.
