- W2564657920 abstract "Molecular imaging directly from human tissue by mass spectrometry has been demonstrated for well over a decade. Since that time, extensive pioneering research and development has enabled mass spectrometry to be a commercially viable molecular imaging technology. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) imaging mass spectrometry is a well-established form of this technology for clinical and biological applications since it can determine the in situ distribution of biologically important molecules, including small molecules such as drugs and metabolites, lipids, and proteins. The technology does not require any target-specific reagent such as antibodies and directly measures the analytes themselves in tissue specimens without prior knowledge of their potential presence. This technology provides highly specific molecular information that can be used to determine the molecular phenotype of the disease state and its progression, therapeutic efficacy, disease biomarkers, molecular tumor margins, and aid in the molecular assessment of mechanisms of disease pathology. This chapter will review the clinical utility of MALDI imaging mass spectrometry and discuss its application to several diseases, including diabetes and cancer. Current developments in the field are aimed at improving throughput and facilitating the ease of use of the technology by pathologists and other health care specialists as a complement to current methods, ultimately with the goal of improving patient diagnoses and outcomes." @default.
