- W2564754560 abstract "Figure 4 shows a schematic diagram of how we have interpreted our photanicrographs for contracted skeletal muscle. The diagram of the capillary network around the shortened muscle fibre was sketched fran various S.E.M. views of the corrosion casts. We then sketched what the capillary network would look like if the muscle fibre had been extended to its resting length. The resulting view agrees with our corrosion cast results for fully extended muscle. Figure 4 shows that during contraction when the muscle shortens, the anastarotic vessels must be brought closer together and the straight capillary segments must bend and fold. This figure also demonstrates that while the assumption of straight parallel capillaries may be applied to resting skeletal muscle, it cannot be applied to the shortened muscle. In tenus of oxygen transport to the contracted muscle fibre, our S.E.M. views suggest as a first approximation a simple diffusion rocx1el of a cylindrical muscle fibre supplied, at any point down its length, by a unifonn peripheral oxygen supply. In applying this rocx1el we are assuming that although the capillaries do not provide a closed surface around the fibre, they are close enough that there is a significant interaction between the O2 diffusion fields around adjacent vessels. This will create a unifonn oxygen level around the periphery of the fibre. Inherent in this rocx1el are our assump tions that within a given cross-section that PO levels in the capillaries around the fibre are the same and ~t the muscle fibre is cylindrical. As with Krogh's rocx1el we assume a constant unifonn oxygen consumption rate through a given cross-section of muscle. w= are also ignoring any axial diffusion gradients in the tissue. The analysis of this particular rocx1el was first given by Hill (1928) and again by Thews (1952). Hill proposed this rocx1el to describe oxygen transport to nerves or unperfused whole muscles bathed in Ringers. Since the geanetry of this rocx1el did not appear to be representative of any microvascular structure in living tissue, the rocx1el has not previously been studied in this context (Fletcher, 1978). The solution to this problem is quite simple and is given as:" @default.
