- W2564948145 abstract "Patients who receive surgical-orthodontic correction of dentofacial problems expect aesthetic and functional outcomes that remain stable over time, and an understanding of the principles underlying surgical stability is needed to plan treatment that will, in fact, remain stable in the long term. After the very real anatomical changes brought about by orthognathic surgery, physiological adaptation is not only inevitable but also necessary. Although the use of wire osteosynthesis is occasionally still indicated in modern orthognathic surgery, rigid internal fixation (RIF) is used with such overwhelming frequency that it is easy to inappropriately limit one's consideration of how RIF affects stability. Perhaps the most apparent physiological process that can undermine the stability of surgical change is facial growth. Changes in the soft tissues of the head and neck, particularly the cran-iofacial musculature, can have a significant effect on post-treatment stability since their role in maintaining posture means nearly constant forces are applied to the facial skeleton." @default.
