- W2565372391 abstract "This book is a collective project of four authors who discuss paradoxes of liberal democracy, taking as a case study the Danish cartoons crisis of 2006. The authors successfully avoid a juxtaposition of chapters to opt for an in-depth analysis of what they call the paradoxes of democracy that emerged from the cartoons crisis. The book's perspective is enticing, not to say timely. The authors reject the dominant narrative that, at the time of the cartoons crisis, and even more so since the Charlie Hebdo attacks, framed the crisis as an irreducible clash between opposite and exclusionary values: freedom of speech versus religious conviction. To do so, they conducted a survey among Danes in the four months that followed the crisis. Their findings contradict the dominant perception that Danes were ferociously opposed to Muslims by showing that actually the former supported the civil liberties of the latter. They interpret this counter-intuitive result by referring to what they call the “categorization paradox.” Instead of asking respondents about the representation of Muslims in general, their survey differentiates between Muslims and Islamic fundamentalists, with the goal to distinguish opinion according to those who accept the rules of the large society and those who transgress them. The idea of differentiating by what the targeted group does, instead of how it is perceived, has strong heuristic potential. The problem lies in the categorization: “Muslims versus Islamic fundamentalists.” What this means is not clearly laid out. Are Islamic fundamentalists political activists? Or, does this group include Muslims who are not politically engaged but still abide by social behaviors, especially about gender relations or sexual minorities, that can be seen as transgressing social norms?" @default.
