• W2565373051 abstract "Many automated information systems need to: (1) transform and cache information from dynamic, shared databases, (2) reason about the current state of those data, and (3) perform long-running tasks but cannot lock the objects about which they are reasoning, so as to allow concurrent access by other applications. Many of these applications can tolerate some deviation between the state of their caches and that of the shared databases, as long as this deviation is within specified tolerances.This research presents a new approach to maintaining approximate consistency of client caches for such applications. The approach relies on an intelligent interface to active databases that we call a Mediator for Approximate Consistency (MAC). The MAC has several unique features: (1) it permits applications to specify their consistency requirements using a declarative language, (2) it automatically generates the database objects necessary to enforce those consistency requirements, shielding the application developer from the implementation details of consistency maintenance, (3) it provides an explicit representation of consistency constraints in the database, which allows them to be reasoned about and changed dynamically to adapt to evolving situations, and (4) it provides mechanisms for resolving heterogeneity issues between client applications and the databases that serve them.Central to this new approach to consistency management is the concept of a quasi-view, which is a materialized view whose instances are allowed to deviate in controlled ways from the corresponding instances of a similarly defined traditional database view. In this research, we have formalized quasi-views and developed a language for specifying them. We have developed an architecture for the MAC and implemented it in prototype software. The MAC automatically generates consistency enforcement objects from declarative quasi-view specifications. The prototype implementation generates these objects for the ARROW active object database, an extensible software prototype developed as a part of this work. To assess the proposed approach, we have developed a proof-of-concept application and done a detailed analysis of the computational costs of the approach. This analysis demonstrates that all the cost functions are linear with respect to the number of quasi-views defined, indicating that the approach has the potential to scale up to large databases having many quasi-views." @default.
