- W2565409715 abstract "Developing ED skills stations is a challenge. Add to that task a need to develop criteria that span all stages of growth and development, in addition to all levels of severity of illness and injury, and you have a picture of the formidable challenge facing the ED staff at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Tex. Cook Children’s Medical Center, a 183-bed medical center with a 36-bed emergency services department, serves as a pediatric trauma receiving facility in Fort Worth. It also provides the region’s pediatric sexual abuse services. More than 50,000 children are treated annually in the emergency department. Patients range in age from newborn to 21 years. An annual skills lab is used to validate and document the clinical competency of ED staff. The skills lab for the emergency department was scheduled for July, and a visit by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) was scheduled for September. The management team for the emergency department took this opportunity to improve our clinical competency tool. This process included incorporating JCAHO standards for documentation of age-specific clinical competency. 3 Age-specific criteria must be documented according to the population the health care facility serves. Cook Children’s Medical Center serves patients aged 0 to 21 years. Competencies are formatted to assess skills needed to meet the needs of the infant, child, teenager, and adult populations. This assessment also includes any in-service and other educational training received to maintain competence. The ED nursing director, nurse managers, education coordinator, and education committee met to choose the objectives for the skills lab. Staff input during the planning phase was essential because peers often identify subtle opportunities to improve" @default.
