- W2565482624 abstract "Abstract The past several decades have seen significant development in the design and numerical analysis of particle methods for approximating solutions of PDEs. In these methods, a numerical solution is sought as a linear combination of Dirac delta-functions located at certain points. The locations and coefficients (weights) of the delta-functions are first chosen to accurately approximate the initial data and then are evolved in time according to the system of ODEs obtained from a weak formulation of the considered problem. The main advantage of the particle methods is their low numerical diffusion that allows them to capture a variety of nonlinear waves with a high resolution. Even though the most “natural” application of the particle methods is linear transport equations, over the years, the range of these methods has been extended for approximating solutions of convection–diffusion and dispersive equations and general nonlinear problems. In this chapter, we provide a mathematical introduction to deterministic particle methods and review different aspects of their practical implementation such as recovering an approximate solution from its particle distribution and an investigation of various particle redistribution algorithms." @default.
