- W2565626295 abstract "The analysis of urban social inequality and social exclusion focuses our attention on the other side of the contemporary city. In the last chapter, we examined the nature of urban consumption. This emphasized the successful and glamorous side of the city and the increased range of commodities for purchase and activities to engage in for those with the requisite financial and associated resources. The contemporary city has created wealth and poverty, the included and the excluded. There has been the growth of the food banks alongside the new cafe culture. There has been a growth in the relative difference between the wealthy and the poor in most of the developed world’s cities, reflecting economic, social and political shifts. The idea of social exclusion draws our attention to those who, for various reasons, have missed out in the changes that have taken place over the last decades of the twentieth century and raises questions about the extent and significance of polarisation, segregation and exclusion in the restructuring of the city and urban life." @default.
