- W2565931612 abstract "The purpose of this publication is to describe the important pests of filberts and to review their life histories, damage, and control. Illustrations and simple methods for pest identification, as well as how to sample for the pests, also are included. Specific insecticide and miticide sprays are not mentioned in this bulletin. For information on these, consult the Pacific Northwest Insect Control Handbook. Author: M. T. AliNiazee is an associate professor of entomology, Oregon State University, Corvallis. Acknowledgments: Sincere thanks are expressed to Dr. Glenn Fisher and Joseph Capizzi, Extension entomologists, Oregon State University, for their assistance in preparation of this manuscript. Filbert Insect and Mite Pests In the United States, commercial filbert production is restricted to the Pacific Northwest partly because filbert trees cannot tolerate extremes in dry summer heat or winter cold. Consequently, the orchards are concentrated between the western foothills of the Cascade Mountains and the eastern slope of the Coast Range from Vancouver, Washington, to Eugene, Oregon. More than 95 percent of this acreage, approximately 24,000 acres, is in the Willamette Valley. Washirtgton is the only other state in the United States that commercially produces filberts and its production is limited to less than 1,000 acres, mostly in the Vancouver area. Fi-" @default.
