The development of a xeno-free culturing system, online monitoring assays and harvest processes are required before the successful commercial application of cell therapies. Moreover, the traditional two-dimensional (2D) culture of adherent stem cells is not only labor intensive but also lacks constant monitoring of cells during the production process. Therefore, 2D cultures can only be regarded as sub-optimal for the manufacturing of clinical grade stem cells. To overcome these deficiencies the use of stirred tank bioreactors combined with microcarriers provides an attractive alternative. Stem cell-based cell therapy holds great promise to achieve the next generation of medical breakthroughs.
