- W2566197262 abstract "In a recent revision of Nearctic Aleochara Gravenhorst, one species described as Baryodma minuta Casey 1906 was overlooked. It is a valid species assigned to the subgenus Coprochara Mulsant & Rey of the genus Aleochara. Aleochara minuta is redescribed, its genitalia illustrated, a lectotype designated, and the differences between it and A. verna Say discussed. In my revision of the genus Aleochara Gravenhorst of America north of Mexico (Klimaszewski 1984), I had overlooked one valid Nearctic species described by Casey from California: Aleochara (Coprochara) minuta (Casey) originally and erroneously assigned by Casey to the genus Baryodma Thomson. It belongs to the subgenus Coprochara Mulsant and Rey (redefined by Klimaszewski 1984) and is most closely related to Aleochara verna Say, a species broadly distributed across all of North America. Casey reported A. minuta from the coastal region of California, from San Francisco to Pomona, and from Iowa. I was able to examine the syntype series of the species from California, comprised of 3 males, 4 females and 3 specimens of undetermined sex (undissected). One male and two females bear precise locality data (1 male: California, Los Angeles County, 2 females California, Pomona Mts.) and the remaining specimens bear only California locality labels. I have not seen the specimen from Iowa, but suspect that it represents a small specimen of A. verna. Casey (1906) did not designate a holotype in the original description and therefore all his specimens must be considered as syntypes. In the redescription below, I designate one of the female syntypes as lectotype. This specimen was chosen because it bears more precise locality data and because the locality was mentioned in the original description; sex of the specimens is unirnportant since the genitalia of both A. minuta and A. verna are very similar in structure. A. minuta seems to be restricted to the coastal mountainous areas of southern California and southcentral Arizona, while A. verna occurs across the entire Nearctic region. Further investigation on the distribution of A. minula, on larvae of the two species, and host preferences are needed to understand both speciation mechanisms. Additional distribution data for A. minuta are provided from Arizona and San Mateo County in California. All but 3 specimens used in this study were dissected, their genitalia dehydrated in absolute alcohol and mounted in Canada balsam on micro-slides pinned with the specimens. Casey's types are deposited in the collection of the United States National Museum (USNM), Washington. Two additional nontype specimens are deposited in the collection of the Transvaal Museum (TMSA), Pretoria, South Africa." @default.
