- W2567301757 abstract "Demetrius of Phalereum is as mysterious as he is a decisive figure in the literary scene of the end of the fourth century bc: student of Theophrastus and major political figure in Athens, he ruled the city with a moderate regime from 317 to 307 bc, managing to restore the devastated city coffers thanks to a meticulous fiscal policy that alienated from him the favour of citizenship. Dismissed by his countrymen, who were eager for a more democratic and relaxed regime, he entered the service of Ptolemy I Soter in Egypt, where he was one of the creators of the Museum and the Library. Due to the damnatio memoriae of his fellow citizens and, probably, of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, there is little evidence of his work and few contemporary testimonies. To deal with this situation, from the mid-nineteenth century, many scholars, starting from scarce fragments of the indirect tradition, mostly of later modifications, tried to outline this figure reliably. The aim of the article is to offer a complete overview of the studies that took place from the end of the nineteenth century on, highlighting two trends. The first, headed by Wilamowitz, idealized the figure of peripatetic Demetrius, based on sources in his favour consolidated during the Roman times. The second strand, which instead pursues a literary profile of Demetrius far less idealistic, presents him as a political officer loyal to his representatives and little influenced by his philosophical background." @default.
