- W2569184776 abstract "The collection of microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract (gut microbiota) is increasingly being recognized as a powerful metabolic organ needed for various physiological functions of the body in health. Major disturbances of the gut microbiota either cause or potentiate gastrointestinal as well as metabolic diseases. The microbial number and composition that varies in the gut depending on anatomic location is dominated by two phyla: the Bacteroidetes and the Firmicutes. There is an evolutionary process for the gut microbiota from birth to advancing age. A stable character is achieved by adolescence. Establishment of the adult microbiota is influenced by environmental factors, diet, nature and various medications, mostly antibiotics. Its subsequent character is a progressive process. In the elderly, a reduction in the numbers of bifidobacteria and Bacteroides has been observed. Gut microbiota participates in maintenance of energy homeostasis and gut and systemic immunity mainly through production of short chain fatty acids by fermentation of soluble fiber in the diet. Although the exact pathogenesis of many gut microbiota-related disorders is yet to be fully studied, there is growing evidence that obesity and obesity related disorders, such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and atherosclerosis, components of metabolic syndrome, are to various degrees related to altered gut microbiota. Many neoplastic diseases including colon cancer are reported to be caused by cytotoxic effects of certain microbial species. The benefits of targeted therapy to maintain and promote healthy gut microbiota through dietary modifications that promote consumption of prebiotics, probiotics and synbiotics, offer new ideas in our multimodal approach to prevention and therapy of many disorders related to old age, improve life span and above all, quality of life in the golden years." @default.
