- W2571276078 abstract "There are perceptible signs of a shift in the culture of climate change action beyond a focus on immediate causes - the burning of fossil fuels. People are moved to question the way of life that in this era, as in no other, threatens the existence of all the species and Earth as we know it. Rising voices identify not only silent springs but speak soberly of the accelerating potential for a world without us. There is a deepening perception that we are being refashioned in a manner that cleaves us from our humanity in the name of liberating us from our old embodied selves. Are the new technologies so reshaping us that we lose the very qualities that can save us, the other species, the Earth? In this emerging cultural perspective the struggle against climate change is not about climate change per se. It is about humans' relationships with the Earth as they are too with other humans, other species. A fresh start carries both a new hope and a deepening challenge. Necessarily it moves outside the immediate context of humanly induced changes in the global climate to examine who we are and what we may become, our ecologically-based reciprocities with the Earth and the Earth community, and how we might remake the future. All this is to question, to re-examine and let go the belief that economic growth is essential if we are to prosper, and too, that the Earth exists for us. More than two decades since the silencing of the disturbed voices of Australian climate scientists on a warming world, we now hear a choir of agitated voices identify this as The Critical Decade and our chance to avoid abrupt, catastrophic and irreversible change. In the social-cultural context of both urgency and the playing out of deeply-set causes, following the work of others, I discuss two responses that give cause for hope. The first identifies the socially formed and complex levels of being human - our 'human nature'. The deepest layer of our humanity lies in the universal and abiding realm of the reciprocal - the unending process of giving and returning. The second is often identified today as ecological consciousness - the sense of ecological responsibility for the Earth, the restoration of ourselves, and the Earth community. The last response comes with a warning or qualification: without addressing these deeper causes of a prospect that may even be terminal, not only will climate change hasten. The still sad music of humanity, along with the song of the birds, may be heard no more." @default.
