- W257266258 abstract "Salvation: Scenes from Life of St. Francis. By Valerie Martin. New York: Knopf, 2001. xii + 268 pp. $24.00 (cloth). Francis of Assisi: A Revolutionary Life. By Adrian House. Mahwah, N.J.: Hidden Spring, 2001. xv + 336 pp. $28.00 (cloth). At western end of my garden, affixed to a fence, behind fig tree and between kiwi vines, reposes a plaster bird feeder depicting Saint Francis of Assisi. Now, in spring, Francis is visible, but by summer, when fig and kiwis are in full leaf, he will be hidden from sight. My plaster Francis is not a particularly egregious representation but is nevertheless sentimentalizing; it detracts, like most modern depictions of saint, from sharp, even harsh, gospel reality of his life and witness. two books under review here admirably succeed, in very different ways, in presenting a flesh and blood Francis, a saint who is simultaneously strange and wondrous. novelist Valerie Martin, most widely known for her novel Mary Really, intends Salvation: Scenes from Life of St. Francis to be anti-- sentimental and therefore anti-stereotypical. She decided that Francis's story might be best presented in a series of scenes, beginning in dark, final days, so full of physical suffering, and adulation of mob, and concluding in bright clear light of his conversion, when he was a young man with all his possibilities before him (p. 14). By contrast, in Francis of Assisi: A Revolutionary Life, Adrian House uses a conventional chronological framework, following Francis from birth to death. result, however, is far from conventional; House successfully captures the almost continuous drama of Francis's life and the social, economic, political, military, and religious forces (p. xiv) that shaped that life. Martin, making full use of her novelist's eye and ear (and nose), transforms material into thirty-one powerful and deeply moving scenes from Francis's life. Each chapter abounds with exact renderings of sights, sounds, and smells of Francis's world, as in this description of dead saint lying in state: The wounds [his stigmata] are like two brown leaves lying against white flesh, as if they fell there when [the monks carrying Francis] passed under trees on road (p. 203). House, using more detail, is especially good at presenting familial and social dynamics of life in thirteenth-century Italy; he too has a sharp eye and is very sensitive to landscape of central Italy, terrain he has clearly trod in Francis's footsteps. By working backward from Francis's death, Martin ably works out T. …" @default.
