- W257432868 abstract "Chemical modification of naturally occuring peptides is a successful strategy to obtain superagonists or antagonists for peptidergic receptors or inhibitors for proteinases. For therapeutic use of such compounds it is desirable that they cannot be destroyed by peptidases or proteinases. However, the half life of synthetic peptides is not only influenced by enzymatic degradation but also by renal or biliary elimination. The latter phenomenon is the subject of the following report. How are peptides recognized by liver cells? How can they be internalized into hepatocytes and excreted into the bile? The highlight of my findings is the unexpected fact that numerous foreign peptides are taken up into liver cells by a secondary active carrier-mediated mechanism. At present it cannot be excluded that certain peptide hormones are eliminated by the same pathway." @default.
