- W2574807218 abstract "Dislocation after hip replacement is a disturbing occurrence for the patient and the s u r g e ~ n . ~ , ~ More subtle episodes of hip subluxation are a source of discomfort for the patient and may promote wear and implant loosening. Although prevention of hip instability is considered to be of utmost importance by the orthopedic community, dislocation remains one of the most common orthopedic complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA).'8,45,48, 63 Treatment of hip instability can be difficult. Although about two thirds of cases can be managed successfully with nonoperative treatment, many patients eventually require surgical treatment, and one third of patients are not rendered stable by the new pr~cedure.'~, 47, This article reviews the epidemiologic features of instability after THA. This information may help the surgeon estimate the risk of hip instability in a particular patient based on that patient's risk factors. As a corollary, application of specific measures to reduce the likelihood of instability in high-risk patients may help surgeons reduce the overall frequency of this troubling complication." @default.
