- W2574957029 abstract "Summary. Interruption of in vivo blood circulation in the eyes of cats and rabbits by means of external pressure for 1 hr decreases the adenosine triphosphate content of the retina by approximately 40%. Interruption of the blood supply to the retina only, in cats by clamping off of the optic nerve and with it the central retinal artery for 1 hr, does not cause a significant difference between treated and control eyes in regard to adenosine triphosphate content. ZusammenJassung. The normal metabohsm of a tissue strongly depends on the blood circulation. Changes in blood circulation particularly affect the processes for which the presence of oxygen is necessary for normal function. One of the processes which is affected particularly is the formation of energyrich phosphate containing compounds. A representative of these energyrich metabolic compounds is adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is formed during glycolysis and in a much higher yield by the citric acid cycle. As far as the authors know there has been no study published which is concerned with the ATP content of the retina in relation to the blood circulation. No report on ATP-catabolism and turnover rates are known to the authors. Unfortunately, no histoehemical determination of ATP is possible, therefore, no exact information on the distribution of ATP among various eel1 types of the retina and the possible compartimentalizati on within various cells is available. The aim of the present investigation was then to determine to what extent the over-all ATP level of the retina is influenced by in vivo interruption of the blood supply." @default.
