- W2575181350 abstract "The acute and chronic toxicity and the effect of dietary levels of dieldrin in a range 0.05 to 15 00 ppm on the breeding success of guinea-fowl and viability of the progeny were investigated. Significantly higher egg production of flocks exposed to higher dietary levels and greater viability (weight gain and egg production) of Fi progeny of these flocks was accounted to a selection (resulting from dieldrin intoxication) for increased vigour. No significant differences in fertility or hatchability were noted but survival of chicks of the 15 ppm flocks during the first seven days of hatching was significantly lower than at the other dietary levels. No indication of dieldrin reducing the shell thickness of eggs could be found. mT Values at the 15 and 5 ppm dietary levels were 94 and 524 days respectively, no difference in susceptibility of the sexes being observed. Prolonged exposure produced a relative increase in liver weight, this increase being positively correlated with dosage in healthy birds, but negatively correlated in birds succumbing to dieldrin intoxication. While a highly significant correlation between carcass and liver burdens of individual birds was found, no significant differences in dieldrin residues in these tissues could be determined between cocks and hens or between healthy and poisoned birds at the same dietary level. After attaining a storage equilibrium in carcass and liver tissues after some three to nine months, continued exposure to dieldrin resulted in a considerable decline in tissue burdens. During the breeding season between 25 and 60 per cent of ingested dieldrin was excreted in the eggs. The mean storage ratios over the entire dietary range fluctuated between 0.8 in carcass and 4.3 in liver. The storage factor in each tissue showed a three-fold difference over the dietary range, the storage factor being inversely proportional to the dietary level. The half-lives of dieldrin in carcass and liver tissue were established at 24 and 26 days respectively, but no degradation could be established during the incubation of the egg. It would appear that acute or chronic intoxication to guinea-fowl resulting from application of dieldrin as currently registered by the Department of Agricultural Technical Services for harvester termite control is remote" @default.
