The evolution of ice particles within such cloud and their relation to parent convective sources is currently poorly studied.The Aerosol and Chemical Trasnport In tropical conVEction (ACTIVE) and Tropical Warm Pool International Cloud Experiment (TWP-ICE) aircraft field campaigns were conducted from Darwin, Australia between November 2005 and February 2006, to study convective processes and cirrus outflow characteristics under various meteorological regimes; including continental deep convection, sea-breeze convergent island thunderstorms and large-scale monsoon convection.This paper discusses the changing microphysical makeup of ice particles in cirrus outflow from such convection as a function of time from their convective source, and relates this evolution to the convective intensity of source cells. A combination of aircraft in situ instrumentation, ground-based polarimetric radar and satellite datasets are used to this end. Microphysical classifications and ice water content measurements are taken from a Cloud Particle Imager (CPI) onboard the high altitude (15 km limit) Egrett aircraft, with additional particle sizing information from a Cloud Imaging Probe (CIP). Distance and time from convective source is inferred from trajectory simulations using satellite and radar imagery, with convective intensity proxies calculated from radar reflectivity volumes and maximum reflectivity heights. Since cirrus anvil properties are important to the radiation budget over the tropical warm pool, a better understanding of the lifecycle and evolution of ice particles in tropical cirrus are key to improving our knowledge of the tropical energy budget." @default.
