- W2575718168 abstract "Dirofilariosis, caused by the nematode Dirojilaria repens, is a helmh the larvae or microfilariae are found in the blood. The disease is usually asymptomatic in dogs, although subcutaneous cysts may develop due to adult worms; it sometimes causes a secondary pseudoeczematous dermatitis due to the microtiariae in the blood. The culicine carrier is a female Aedes or Culex, which inoculates the larvae when biting the mammalian host. As well as dogs, foxes, cats and lions can be infected, as can humans, although in immunologically competent human hosts the worms are usually immature. The first record of human disease was by Addario (1885). He gave the name Filaria conjunctivae to the worm detected in a conjunctival cyst. I;: conjunctivae was identified as D. repens (Ralliet and Henri, 1911) and definitively accepted by Dissanaike (1979). Since the first description, over 150 observations have been cited in the world’s medical literature, of which there have been 75-80 cases in Europe, mainly in Italy. Barale and colleagues (1989) reported 36 published observations and 15 unpublished cases in France. In humans, D. repens causes either a subcutaneous cyst or oedema associated with the migration of adult worms. The worm is often located in the eye or in the eye socket, and can be seen moving under the conjunctiva, within a subconjunctival cyst or in the eyelid. This location leads to itchy and painful lesions (Euzeby, 1984). Other locations have been observed, including the scrotum, the peritoneal cavity and the pulmonary" @default.
