- W257717244 abstract "A VALUABLE SOURCE OF INFORMATION about the future is available to biology teachers-over one hundred years of science fiction literature. Because of its reputation as escape literature, science fiction has traditionally been barred from classrooms; but judging from Williamson's (1975) list of science fiction courses, and his estimate of close to one thousand courses studying science fiction, this subject is gaining respect and acceptance from elementary through college-level teachers. This respect stems partially from a need felt by educators to renovate the curriculum by introducing materials into courses that develop a working perspective of the future for students. Science fiction is the literature of the future. It illustrates imaginative scientific and technological possibilities and human reactions to them. Although science fiction has historically been based on the physical sciences, the number of biological plots has increased recently because of advances in molecular biology and the ever-present danger of environmental disaster. Biological science fiction can anticipate future developments. Past science fiction has accurately predicted social problems such as overpopulation and ecological disasters and technological developments including lasers, computers, and nuclear weapons. Novelist Frederick Pohl (1970) explains that" @default.
