And it is this commitment to its original purpose that separates it from other anthologies about women and media, and that makes it such an indispensible resource for anyone interested in women's role in media worldwide.The Palgrave International Handbook was inspired by the Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media, a fifty-nine-nation study for which Byerly served as the principal investigator. This anthology includes reports on twenty-nine of those nations, and the authors in most cases are the original researchers who contributed to the Report. The Global Report not only outlined the occupational status of women in news organizations in those nations by number, but it also described how women fared in each nation's media environments. Byerly emphasizes that the Report-and this volume-marked the first time such examinations were driven by specific data.Despite its girth, this anthology is logically and simply divided. The editor divides the chapters into four segments; each chapter discusses one country, but the book separates each country into one of four divisions: Taking the Lead, Marking Substantial Progress, Negotiating the Constraints, and Challenging the Barriers. (The fact that more countries fit into the latter two categories of the anthology serves as a statement itself about how much more progress women in the media need to make.)While each chapter does provide very specific quantitative information, the authors succeed in making the chapters interesting and original, so they are far from dry recitations of numbers alone. The reports are compelling because they show how the data fit into each nation's bigger picture-its history, politics, culture, and other factors that drive and often control women's status in media organizations.
