A SLOW UPWARD FLOW OF FRESH WATER AS A RESULT OF AN ARTESIAN CONDITION IN THE GROUND WATER NEAR OR IN THE UNDERLYING ROCK LEADS TO THE FORMATION OF QUICK CLAY, THE RATE OF FORMATION BEING FASTEST WHERE THE DEPTH TO ROCK SURFACE IS SMALLEST. ON THE OTHER HAND THE LEACHING OF THE SALT ALSO REDUCES THE PH VALUE AND INCREASES THE EH VALUE, RESULTING IN A CHEMICAL WEATHERING OR STRENGTHENING OF THE CLAY. A DECREASE OF PH IN THE PORE WATER PROMOTES DISINTEGRATION OF THE MINERALS, WHICH RELEASES FREE CATIONS. IN THE FIRST PLACE POTASSIUM, IRON AND ALUMINUM INCREASE BOTH THE PLASTICITY INDEX AND THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF THE CLAY BY CATION ADSORPTION. IN THE SECOND PLACE CALCIUM, IRON AND ALUMINUM WILL PRECIPITATE AS CEMENTING AGENTS, AND IN THIS WAY STRENGTHEN THE CLAY STRUCTURE. THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS CHEMICAL WEATHERING IS ILLUSTRATED. ATTENTION IS FOCUSED ON IRON. THE FIRST CHEMICAL EXTRACTION OF IRON TYPE 1 AND 2, INCLUDES IRON ADSORBED IN EXCHANGEABLE POSITIONS, AND IRON AS LOOSE GELS ADHERING TO THE SURFACE OF THE CLAY PARTICLES. THE SECOND CHEMICAL EXTRACTION OF IRON TYPE 3 SHOULD DISSOLVE STRONGER CEMENTING AGENTS. DUE TO OXIDATION PROCESSES (INCREASING EH), IRON 2& CHANGES TO RION 3&, WHICH WILL HYDROLYSE AND RECRYSTALLIZE.
