- W2580095011 abstract "Transgender-identified and gender non-conforming older adults have unique needs, which remain overlooked- what are the steps toward positive change?Only now, eighty-five years after the first transsexual surgery (Lili Elbe-how interesting that they just made the movie The Danish Girl about her) and sixty-three years after Christine Jorgensen (the first well-known sex-change surgery) do we see the first large out population of individuals who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming (TGNC- transgender/gender non-conforming). TGNC is a gender identifier now being used in order to be as inclusive as possible, and which includes such sub-identifiers as transsexual, transgender, cross-dresser, gender-bending, and others (Witten and Eyler, 2012).Despite the fact that LGBT aging is now increasingly discussed, the unique needs of the older transgender-identified and the older gender non-conforming populations are still very much overlooked. In this article, I examine historical challenges faced by this population, and review their current status. I also discuss some of the important steps needed to support the future well-being of these populations.A Rose Is Not Always a RoseThe linguistic landscape of the TGNC community is dynamic, political, racially and culturally dependent, and very much cohort-dependent. This makes understanding the demographics and needs of this population extremely difficult (Witten and Eyler, 2012). While current gender non-conforming youth often claim the word Queer as an identifier, members of the trans-elder population may see this as a pejorative term. Older adults of the current elder community grew up in an exceptionally narrow linguistic topology. For this older cohort, terms such as transsexual, transgender, and cross-dresser were the principle available gender-identifier choices. For the purposes of this article, transsexual is defined as an individual who pursues irreversabstract ible physical changes because they feel that their gender self-perception is inconsistent with their natal (birth) sex. These are individuals who typically take contra-sex hormones, have genital surgery, etc. Transgender-identified persons are individuals who may take some hormones, may dress in contra-gender clothing, and may even pursue surgery later in life. However, they may also be happy with their natal genital sex. Even these definitions are slippery, as there are many ways in which to define these terms. These early identity choices were based on the assumption of a binary sex-gender identity, which constrained descriptors and confined the choices of personal identifier. As a result, many older adults were forced to construct their own personal identifiers such as woman with masculine experience or female-bodied but chromosomally and genitally male (Witten, 2015a). Today, this historical cultural binary generates many problems for the elder TGNC population. In contrast with the past, today's youth to midlife gender non-conforming persons can choose from a far wider collection of identifiers (e.g., bi-gendered, gender-blending, gender-bending, agendered). Facebook offers more than seventy descriptors (personal communication with Deirdre Condit, associate professor, Political Science and International Studies, in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University, 2015). I offered nineteen choices in my study (Witten, 2014b), along with the option to write in other descriptors. I ended up with twenty-seven choices after the write-in offerings were included in the list. You Must Raise Your Hand to Be CountedBecause of historical violence and abuse against those individuals who are TGNC-identified, it is hard to know the exact size of this population. Many elders have chosen to remain under the radar for a variety of reasons (i.e., fear of abuse, avoidance of stigma, maintenance of a new identity). Consequently, exact demographics of the TGNC-identified population are unknown. …" @default.
