- W2580862018 abstract "We read with interest the article by Miller et al. entitled, “Factors Associated with Misplaced Endotracheal Tubes During Intubation in Pediatric Patients,” published in The Journal of Emergency Medicine ( 1 Miller K.A. Kimia A. Monuteaux M.C. Nagler J. Factors associated with misplaced endotracheal tubes during intubation in pediatric patients. J Emerg Med. 2016; 51: 9-18 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (9) Google Scholar ). In the article, the authors' aims were to evaluate the frequency of misplaced endotracheal tubes that were undetected by clinical examination or capnography, and to identify risk factors for improper depth of insertion. They found these misplacements occur frequently in the pediatric emergency department, with low placement being most common, particularly in girls and younger children. We congratulate the authors for this valuable study, and we have a few comments. In Reply to: Discrepancy Between Pediatric and Adult Patients Concerning Misplaced Endotracheal Tubes During IntubationJournal of Emergency MedicineVol. 52Issue 4PreviewWe would like to thank Claret et al. for their Letter to the Editor entitled, “Discrepancy Between Pediatric and Adult Patients Concerning Misplaced Endotracheal Tubes During Intubation.” They raise the important question: Why is the frequency of clinically unrecognized misplaced endotracheal tubes higher in pediatric patients than in the published literature for adult patients? We would offer 3 potential explanations for this difference. First, our definition of a misplaced endotracheal tube is more inclusive than other published literature. Full-Text PDF" @default.
