- W258298544 abstract "A New Generation of African Writers: Migration, Material Culture & Language, by Brenda Cooper. Woodbridge: James Currey and Scottsville: University of Kwazulu-Natal Press, 2008. be + 182pp. ISBN 978-1-86914-156-1. £45. In the wake of recent scholarship that has examined the remarkable history of new African writers, Brenda Cooper's A New Generation of African Writers, superb, meticulously researched and a symbolic transition from the Old to the New, with considerable energy and insight, is an elaborate compendium of the manipulation of the English language. Nucleated around a young generation of Africans who either migrated or spent time studying and writing outside of the African countries in which they were born and grew up, the book examines how Biyi Bandela, Leila Aboulela, Jamal Mahjoub, Moses Isegawa, and Chimamanda Ngozi in their works were able to manipulate the English language effectively in describing the realities of the globalised landscape of the streets of Brixton, New York or Central Station, Amsterdam. The eight sections of the book bespeak the historic desire to shelve the imperialist and patriarchal tropes and symbols that characteristic of the English language. It demonstrates how these writers in the process of translating more than one culture, language and knowledge, incorporated into existing English language structure words and wisdom from their indigenous languages as well as the shape and rhythm of words themselves as object. The argument developed and stretched across the content of this volume borders on how these African writers are capable of expressing their world with a language that is already saturated with Western symbols and colonial metaphors. It tallies with Bourdieu's concept of 'symbolic capital' which many post-colonial migrants lack, and which relates to the literal and material realities of life that they seek to portray in their works. Cooper, adroit at creating a critical analysis of the politics of alternative language inclusion, perceptively points out that the use of those variants of English is not the voluntary eruption of an indigenous culture but, as a contiguous trope, it proposes an ability to negotiate that cultural distance of which it is itself a sign. However, language according to Deleuze and Guattari comprise 'order-words'. They suggest that language is made not to be believed but to be obeyed, and to compel obethence. According to Anika Lemaire, the human being acquires his individuality only on condition of being inserted into the symbolic order which governs and specifies humanity. Deleuze and Guattari, however, proposed an alternative to this route knowledge system in the undertow of their English. This occurs when texture, sound, rhythm and words are carried over from the mother tongue to the adopted literary form. …" @default.
