- W2583016857 abstract "A field trial was conducted in May 2011 at a real contaminated site in Castleford, West Yorkshire to the north of England, as part of the largest UK government Technology Strategy Board funded research project on in-situ land remediation project SMiRT (Soil Mix Remediation Technology). SMiRT site lies at a National Grid reference SE 434263 where the river Aire runs around the entire site. Several phases of contaminants development have been undertaken at the site over time where manufacture of concentrated dyestuff and explosives took place in the site after it was used as landfilling of black oxide of iron, general refuse wastes and incinerator ash. Results from past and recent groundwater and soil samples analyses indicated that the site is severely contaminated with volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Soil stratigraphy consisted of 4m of made ground, overlying 4.5m of sand and gravel, which in term are underlain by bedrock. The groundwater level at the top of the sand & gravel layer provided ideal conditions for a permeable reactive barrier system (PRBs). The PRB system at SMiRT was constructed to form an inner hexagon and PRB walls were isolated by low permeability cut-off walls to form a hydraulically isolated area. Each PRB wall contained different reactive material including a combination of inorgano-organo bentonites (IOB), zeolite and organoclay. The current study aims at evaluating the relative efficiency of the three main modified bentonites using different surfactants at both laboratory and site scale. Site cores were retrieved from the PRB wall sections to evaluate the effectiveness of soil mixing technology. Batch adsorption and treatability study using site groundwater were undertaken to study the effectiveness of remediation. The results showed good mixing quality of the reactive materials. It also showed variable materials efficiency due to the materials preparation and characteristics as per the thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA-DTG) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results. Permeability of PRB-soil mix materials was also tested and was similar to the permeability of the native soil." @default.
