- W2583263124 abstract "With the profound significance of animals in humans' lives and deep emotional attachment recognized, it is reasonable to hypothesize that animals' primary caregivers often face responsibilities similar to those faced by caregivers of critically ill/dying human patients. An extensive literature addresses mental health considerations relevant to caregiving for dying human patients. Caregivers of dying patients face complex and multifaceted responsibilities. Caregivers are expected to assess and report information regarding the patient's pain, including the source, nature, and amount of pain. Many caregivers of animal patients at the end of life are ill prepared for the demands of this role and as a result experience profound psychological strain. The experience of grief is universal but varies greatly and is as unique as the bereaved individual. Caregivers are likely to be in a vulnerable emotional state. Children's relationships with the family pet may be as strong as their parents' and in some cases even more significant." @default.
