- W2585727089 abstract "In 2013, a new store opened in Poole, on the English south coast, in an area of the High Street described in the local press as ‘a run-down part of town known for empty units, charity shops and cut price retailers’ (Astrup 2013: np). This new opening was seemingly good news in a town centre struggling in times of recession, and which had applied—albeit unsuccessfully—to be one of Mary Portas’ pilot town projects. Given that a report on the town’s retail health stressed the vacancy rate was above the national average, leaving areas appearing ‘rather tired and neglected in places’ (Peter Brett Associates 2013), the fact that the new premises owner had spent £100,000 ensuring the shop to be ‘the best looking in Poole’ was surely to be welcomed. But the store in question—Purrfectly Discreet—was one specializing in lingerie, sex toys and other ‘adult products’, the windows obscuring the interior of the store hosting two large images of female models in lingerie. The owner of a school wear shop opposite appeared especially angry, arguing ‘families will think twice before coming along here … when people ask for directions to the schoolwear shop I don’t think I’m going to be happy to say go along to the sex shop and cross the road’. Jonathan Sibbett, chairman of Poole Town Centre Management Board, also went on record to state the new shop was ‘detrimental’ to their plans to enhance the appeal of the High Street, suggesting ‘this shop will not fit in with the mix of current retailers and will therefore affect the achievement of our aims’ (cited in Astrup, ibid.). Some other residents were more blunt in their assessment:" @default.
