Special attention is paid to studies on protein supplementation of grass silage and to studies using fish meal under feeding conditions prevailing in Norway. Herring meal, replacing oil cakes, significantly improved liveweight gain and feed efficiency in young, growing cattle and lambs; also, wool growth was increased. Studies in lactating dairy cows indicate that supply of 60g digestible crude protein per kg fat-corrected milk is a useful basis for protein feeding under practical farm condition. However, considerable deviations from such a recommendation may be economically and physiologically justified at different levels of production, time of lactation, feeding intensity, diet composition and protein quality. Increasing protein supply in grass silage by means of nitrogen fertilization of the grass may be beneficial, but not always very efficient. Supplementing such diets with oil cake protein has significantly improved milk yield. On the other hand, silage made from ‘early’-cut grass may be superior to that made from ‘late’-cut grass when fed at similar energy intake. References are made to studies in which oil cake and herring meal supplementation gave similar milk yield. However, herring meal feeding significantly increased milk protein concentration. Similar studies in dairy goats significantly improved milk and protein yield, but lowered milk fat test.
