• W2586753820 abstract "Activity and school impairment in children with severe/difficult-to-treat asthma have not been previously described. We examined responses to the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI:Asthma) instrument by asthma control in children in The Epidemiology and Natural History of Asthma: Outcomes and Treatment Regimens (TENOR) study. TENOR was an observational study between 2001–2004 of patients with severe/difficult-to-treat asthma. This analysis included children ages 6-11 years at baseline with data representing the impairment domain of EPR-3 asthma guidelines and responses to the WPAI:Asthma. Baseline characteristics and activity/school impairment at baseline and Month 12 were compared between very poorly controlled (VPC) and not well-controlled (NWC) asthma using chi-square test (categorical) or t-test (continuous). At baseline, n=337 (64.7%) children had VPC asthma and n=184 (35.3%) had NWC asthma. VPC children had a higher proportion of Black children (30.0% vs. 19.6%, p=0.01 for race/ethnicity), longer mean±SD asthma duration (6.3±2.5 vs. 5.8±2.5 years, p=0.02), and higher total geometric mean (range) IgE (223.5 [1-12,252] vs. 127.3 [1-6,087] IU/mL, p<0.001). Medication use was similar between the two groups. Children with VPC vs those with NWC asthma had greater mean±SD activity and school impairment at baseline (activity: 31.0±28.0 vs. 17.0±19.4, p<0.001; school: 29.0±30.8 vs. 14.9±22.6, p<0.001) and at Month 12 (activity: 30.2±29.6 vs. 11.7±16.1, p<0.001; school: 29.8±33.7 vs. 8.5±18.9, p<0.001). Despite standard of care, increased activity and school impairment was observed in severe/difficult-to-treat asthma children with VPC versus NWC asthma. Findings suggest need for improved asthma management strategies and novel therapies in these children." @default.
