- W2587702015 abstract "The city of Zlin, as we know it nowadays, was mainly builtduring the period before the WWII by the company led by TomasAntonin Bata. Bata is worldwide known for his successfulbusiness in the field of shoemaking industry and trade. Zlinwas a place where his professional life began and where thefirst factory was built. Nevertheless, the project of theindustrial enterprise included not only the manufacturingcenter, but it was also designed and realized as acomprehensive social project. The factory as one of the totalinstitutions of the old modernity was surrounded by strictlyplanned quarters of brick houses and other estates intended forleisure and goods consumption of workers and their families. Sothe city was built on the principle of social differentiation, which corresponded to the division of labour in theorganization body of the factory. There were many types ofhouses, but mostly common were the duplex (semi-detached) andfourplex houses inhabited by blue-collars’ families. While thecity was planned with the respect to the ideas offunctionalism, where each part has its own position and aspecific relation to the other parts of the city, the design ofhouses can be perceived as an objectification of the idealconception of the working-class family. Although the factory asa producer doesn’t work any more, the houses originallyprojected as temporary housing are still fulfilling theirfunction. They are inhabited by former laborers as well as newdwellers of a wide range of socioeconomic status. The city ischanging in its patterns and pace of everyday life, thusbecoming a post-industrial city in principle. In our paper wewould like to focus on these changes mainly from theinhabitants’ point of view. Through the in-depth interviewswith dwellers we would like to contextualize the individualexperience with living in the city and house built up as anindustrial and social project; designed, prescribed andregulated in every particular detail." @default.
