• W2588248863 abstract "To The Editor: I am writing in regard to Type-II Error Rates (Beta Errors) of Randomized Trials in Orthopaedic Trauma (2001;83:1650-5), by Lochner et al. This paper addresses a very important issue, namely, that of designing studies that have adequate statistical to detect clinically meaningful differences. Unfortunately the paper's primary focus is the calculation of hoc power for studies on fracture care that were reported in the literature between 1968 and 1999. The concept of post hoc makes little sense from a statistical point of view, although it admittedly has appeal for researchers who are trying to find an explanation for their inability to find significant results in their research studies. A second problem in the paper is an example that is very misleading in terms of the relative sample sizes that are needed for studies with a of 80% compared with those needed for studies with a of 95%. Finally there are a few errors in some of the equations that appear in the Appendix.On page 1653, the authors stated that can be calculated before the start of a clinical trial to assist with the determination of sample size or after the completion of a study to determine whether the negative findings were or due to chance. The reference cited in support of this statement is a paper by Goodman and Berlin1. The first part of this statement is essentially correct. However, in several places in their article (e.g., in the abstract and in the opening paragraph), Lochner et al. used the term true difference in discussing the calculation of power.
