• W2588890945 abstract "Microfinance is one of the development strategies adopted in most of the third world countries, Kenya inclusive. The role of Microfinance in poverty alleviation is critical and need not be undermined. Policy is one of the tools that streamlines and enhances efficiency in the development of any sector. The Government of Kenya (GOK) has put in place policies and other legal framework over the last decade which it intends to use to enhance capacity of microfinance institutions to deliver quality service. However, after introduction of policy, there is little comparability on the success of the policy. The study examined policy effectiveness as a strategic management tool on Microfinance Institutions in Kenya. The study specifically looked into the benefit of policy to the users of microfinance service, the extent of policy use as a strategic management tool and to establish the relationship between policy as a strategic management tool and its effectiveness in management of microfinance. Survey design was used because it is appropriate for studies that use questionnaire to obtain answers about a particular topic. Data was collected mainly from primary and secondary sources. The population for sampling is composed of ten microfinance institutions located within Nakuru Municipality. The study found out that the regulatory framework within which the microfinance institutions operate affect their effectiveness in Kenya. The study‟s significance is that that the findings will be beneficial to policy makers and microfinance institutions. It will also form basis for other researchers in the same area of study. This study therefore recommends that since microfinance institutions operate at two levels, those operating under the Microfinance Act and those that are regulated by the Association of Microfinance of Kenya, actions need to be taken to bring each one of them under the Act. This is likely to enhance customer protection, increase accountability, improve efficiency and business sustainability, and meet the policy objectives of alleviating poverty." @default.
