- W2588916615 abstract "The Siberian sculpin, Cottus poecilopus, is widely distributed over the countries of central, northern and eastern parts of Europe. In the Czech Republic, the species occurs exlusively in the Odra (Baltic Sea basin) and Morava (Black Sea) drainage areas. It does not occur in the Labe(North Sea) drainage area. Together with brown trouth, C. poecilopus populates the headwaters of brooks and rivulets in mountain and submontane regions. Cottus poecilopus is included with endangered species within the national conservation legislature, the incidental risk factors are distinctly local as regards distribution and numbers. Analyses of the genetic diversity of C.poecilopus population sampled from the Odra and Morava drainage areas, using cyt b and dloop markers, have shown great differences between the two drainage areas, the mean distance beeing 4.5 % (4.6-5.2 %)in cyt b and 12.6 % (9.8-14.3 %) in dloop. Five haplotypes of cyt b (MC1-MC5) were found in populations from the Morava drainage area, the MC1 appearing to be the basic one as it occurs in all populations sampled. The different haplotypes of cyt b (OC1-OC10)were found in the Odra drainage area, only OC2 and OC6 occurring in all popuations sampled. The individual C. poecilopus populations show characteristic haplotype compositions, which fact may help in determining the origin of populations having originated from translocations of materials used in fishery management. In this way it has been shown that the population living in the river Frysavka originated from that in the Kněhyně R., and the present population in the river Bobrůvka has its origin in that living in the Bystřice Hanacka. The genetic characteristics (genetic distance, marker variability, haplotype distribution) found in the C. poecilopus populations under study by means of mt DNA (cyt b, dloop) make it possible to distinguish between two population complexes baltica and danubialis. The baltica complex comprises C. poecilopus populations in the Baltic Sea river network (the River Odra) and the danubialis complex comprises those living in the Black Sea network (the rivers Danube and Dniester). In the control region, it is possible to discern minor groups as incidental lines. However, since these lines overlap to a considerable extent with the existing populations and can only be identified in the hyper-variable region, not in the coding cyt b gene, they may rather be considered to be the consequence of intraspecific variability. Thus it is opend to discussion whether or not is appeared useful, on this basis of minor morphological differences combined with genetic characteristics, to consider the two European complexes of C. poecilopus (or even other lineages)as separate species, as done by Freyhof et al. (2005) or as suggested by Yokayama et al. (2008) for Cottus poecilopus living in Siberia. The status of C.poecilopus populations living in the Odra and Morava drainage areas can be described in general as favourable and stable. In view of the considerable genetic differences between C.poecilopuis living in the Odra (Baltic Sea) and Morava (Black Sea) drainage areas it is inevitable to avoid incidental translocations of individuals between these two basic drainage areas. In modifications of streams populated by C.poecilopus it is necessary to avoid total approach, with heavy machinery moving in streams beds, which will totally destroy their fish populations. Fishery management focussed on brown trout shows no negative effects on populations of C.poecilopus." @default.
