- W259090280 abstract "at the Piano, Vol. 3. Naxos Historical 8.111217. J.S.Bach Piano Transcriptions. Naxos Historical 8.110658. Johann Strauss II: Paraphrases and Piano Transcriptions. Naxos Historical 8.111226. The Naxos Historical Series, available in most countries except the USA due to possible copyright restrictions, has built a rather impressive catalog of material, especially in the instrumental domain. Collectors of 78-rpm piano recordings have been generally well served by the company's reissues under their Great Pianists rubric, with CDs devoted to Benno Moiseiwitsch, Ignaz Friedman, Artur Schnabel, Mischa Levitzki, Ferruccio Busoni, Josef Lhevinne, Alfred Cortot, Wilhelm Backhaus, and a number of others. The majority of the transfer work for the foregoing has been assigned to either Ward Marston or Mark Obert-Thorn, and the discs bearing their names have, almost without exception, carried clean, honest, properly-pitched, and unproblematic dubbings. Unfortunately a few items managed to slip by with much less reliable transfer quality, and it is here that we encounter the team of Marina and Victor Ledin, usually billed as producers and audio engineers (although restoration mastering engineer Anthony Casuccio is also credited on some of their CDs). Several years ago the Ledins prepared for Naxos a reissue of Edwin Fischer's pioneering 1930s set of The Well-Tempered Clavier by Bach. In a pre-release copy it was discovered that, among other problems, only a few of the Preludes and Fugues were actually transferred at the proper pitch, and those inconsistencies ranged all over the map. The necessary complete re-tooling of the project launched a hiatus during which only a few further Ledin productions appeared on the Naxos Historical label. However, it seems that the Ledins have now reemerged with a half-dozen anthologies of piano material. Among them are the three under review here. While these have generally more reliable pitching, they are also infected with a host of other problems. Three volumes of the Ledins' work have appeared under the rubric of Women at the Piano. (Preliminary announcements hinted at some ten CDs scheduled for this project, but that plan now seems to have been abandoned.) In a review of the first of these, published in another journal, I questioned the validity of the whole concept. Exactly why women pianists, in the 21st century, need to be placed in a special group by themselves is not explained; their artistic achievements were well established long ago without regard to gender. For this series, each player has been granted a single item and no repetition of repertoire is allowed. This immediately limits our view of any given pianist included, many of whom merit much more extensive representation. Volume Three offers examples from early recordings by 20 players, among them Clara Haskil, Elly Ney, Annie d'Arco, Ida Krehm, and Vera Franceschi. A good many of these discs have not previously been reissued, but everything here is afflicted with some of the most dull, drab, heavily filtered piano sound I have encountered on any reissue. The Ledins have attempted to create what they call a seamless listening experience by sonically reducing all the material to lowest common denominator. …" @default.
