In 1948, Jaime Torres Bodet became the second Director-General of UNESCO, and it was during his four years of service that specialized commissions and guidelines were established on the teaching of history for peace and international understanding. Focusing on the negotiations, struggles, and openings associated with UNESCO's education for international understanding programme, with a particular focus on history textbooks, requires a methodology emancipated from the national boundaries often found in historical writings. Silvio Zavala, one of its prominent members, participated in UNESCO's seminars and in the History of Mankind Project in the early 1950s, and its members' recommendations were central to the organizing of the future Comisin Nacional de Libros de Texto Gratuitos (CONALITEG) in 1959." @default.
