Effect-directed analysis (EDA) can be defined as a bioassay-guided fractionation linked to analytical and/or spectroscopic methods enabling detection and identification of compounds responsible for this effect. Usually, sample preparation, extraction, and fractionation/separation are necessary to isolate the fraction with a given bioactivity. The last step of EDA is identification and confirmation, mostly using chromatographic methods hyphenated with spectroscopic ones.
